Doshas
can be eliminated by emisis and purgation if the (Toxins) doshas has collected
in the alimentary canal, but these two procedures on their own would fall
to remove the perturbed doshas present in the vast network of body channels.
Therefore, Panchakarma applies two preparatory steps - lubrication therapy
and fomentation therapy to loosen and mobilize the doshas from the body
channels into the alimentary canal and deliver them into its lumen. The
role of these preparatory steps is identical to the application of lurication
and steam for body channels return to the alimentary canal through openings,
which also would have beeen unblocked by the preparatory measures.
They are Known as Poorva Karmas or Preparatory Therapies
They are two in number
1. Snehana (Oilation)
It is of two types
a) External of Abhyanga or body massage with medicated oils.
b) Internal when the medicated oils are used orally
2.) Svedana (Fomentation Therapy) Steam bath with medicated decoctions.
