Aaranmula Boat Race
Staged in the scenic village of Arranmula, this boat - race takes place during
the month of August / September. Thousands of spectators congregate on the shores
of River Pamba. The boats are nearly 100 ft. long and shaped like snake. The
clusters of boats are called Palliyodams. The boats are manned by a crew of
more than 100 men. This boat race is the part of Aaranmula Temple festival.
Cochin Carnival
Celebrated during the last week of December, this carnival is a major attraction
for the youth to enjoy the party time. It dates back to the Portuguese colonial
rule. During this carnival the Cochin Fort is given a festive look. The major
attraction of this festival is the procession led by Caparisoned Elephants followed
by drums' music and different forms of folk art. The carnival also include the
festivities of North Indian dances.
Flavor Food Festival
The festival takes place every year in the city of Thiruvanathanapuram from
5th to 11th April. It provides the rare opportunity to test the traditional
cuisine of India and Kerala in particular.
Jagannath Festival
It is a colorful 8 days' festival which is held during the months of Feb. and
Mar. at the Jagannath Temple in MADATHIPARAMBU (Kannur). During this festival,
the eminent scholars and social reformers participate in a religious conference.
The festival has also great cultural importance and one gets to see the elephant
procession and fireworks also.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Is the most famous boat race in Kerala which takes place on the PUNNAMADA backwaters
on the second Saturday of August. These magnificent huge snake boats flow in
this backwater with the rhythmic boat songs known as VANCHIPATTU. This event
commemorates the visit of Late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Lokanarkavu Festival
It is a 41 days' affair which takes place at the Lokanakavu Bhagawati Temple.
The major attraction of this festival is the peculiar folk dance called Thacholikali.
This temple is the only place where one can witness this typical style of dancing.
One can also witness the Kalarippayattu dance, which is a form of Martial Art.
The temple is 3000 years old, where Goddess Bhadrakali is worshipped by warriors
with their Marshal Art performance.
