Namchot Festival
Celebrated during the month of December, this festival has both social and
religious importance. The festival marks the Birthday celebration of TSONG KHAPA
(The 14th Century Tibetan Scholor and founder of Gelupa Order). Each and every
monastery is illuminated on this occassion. The Namchot heralds the begining
of Tibetan New Year and it is customery to prepare the traditional dish of the
region - Thukpa.
Yuru Kabgyat Festival
Staged in the monastery of Lamayuru, the main attraction of this festival
is the Lama dance during which Lamas put on the traditional garb and mask which
represents the guardian deities of Tibetan Mythology. The dance represents the
victory of Natural Gods above the demons of the mountains.
Stok Guru Tse Chu Festival
This festival of ladakh deals with the occultic powers of Buddhism and is
also known as the Festival of Oracles. It is held during the months of Feb.
/ Mar.
Gu Stor Festival
Gu Stor means "the 29th day". This festival commemorates the victory of
black hat dancers over evil. The festival takes place at different places at
different time of the year. Such as - in Spituk Monastery (in the month of Jan.),
in Thiksey (in the month of Oct. / Nov.) and Karsha; Zanskar (in the month of
July / August). There are various performances of masked dances that depict
the several legends of Gelukpa Order. During the end of the festival, the strong
forces of evils are burnt to ashes.
