Situated
in Gulbarga district of Karnataka, this site lies at bank of river Bhima.Kanganhalli
is Buddhist site which has revealed a large Stupa. This site has seen two glorious
phases of Art & Architecture which is related to Buddhism sects of Hinayana
(2-1 Centuries B.C) & Mahayana (1-4 th centuries A.D).The excavations has
revealed the lower &upper drums of stupa with height upto 3.1 mts these
drums were poorly preserved,The further elaboration of this stupa was patronised
by the various rulers of atavahana Dynasty.
The site has also yeilded more than 145 inscriptions, with one slab which is
of outstanding significance as being the first & only labelled porraiture
of Great King Ashoka, this slab depictes King Ashoka with his consort with inscriction
"rayo Ashoka". Beside this there were findings of the exquisite sculptures
& architectural members which are supposed to be embellished the exteriors
of the stupa.
