Situated
at the distance of 90 kms. from Bhubaneshwar, Udaigiri is approachable through
National Highway No. 5. The name of this site has been derived with the tradition
that first sunrise in Orissa is seen from here. Covered on three sides by
Spur of hills with opening in the east, it gives a magnificent view of the
vast stretches of plains where one can feel that the land merges with horizon.The
excavation here has revealed a Buddhist Monastic Complex consisting of monastery,
the central chamber of which enshrines an image of sitting Buddha.
This site is situated about 60 kms from the town of Cuttack, in the district
of Jajpur, Orissa.These are the buddist site that dates between 8th to 12th
centuries A.D.
The Excavations at this site has revealed few viharas & one Reservoir
& also a large Buddhist monastic complex . Ecah vihara here has got shrine
chamber,living cells, running varandah, a courtyard & imposing gate. An
inscribed seal found here is called "Madhavapura-Mahavihara" .
During excavation at this site several stone & Bronze images of Buddha,
Bodhisattvas Etc were found with seals,sealings,terracotta & several other
artifacts that belongs to the same era.
