scapes.From Dat you approach the high Tibetian Plateaus (Chang -Tang).4000 nomads
live in the Rupshu area.Go to Hemis by bus from Leh. The best period is from
July to September.Allow 11 days.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 01 : Hemis -SHang(sumdo) , 3hrs.
From the village of Hemis , go down towards Martsel-Lang , then follow a track
suitable for motor traffic which was under construction in 1985.Go up a valley
which is fairly narrow in places , then walk along the riverbed(difficult) as
far asShang (Sumdo).Good campsite near a house.Several rivers to cross.
Day 02 :Shang(Sumdo)-Latza Kongmaru , 7hrs.
Above the village , take a path along the slope through red rock.Then , back
down to the riverbeds.From Chukirmo on , the track leads into gorges.On 2 stretches
horses must be unloaded.Several rivers to cross.Leave the gorges and go up into
the pass.Camp in Latza Kongmaru near a low wall, room for 3 or 4 tents (4800m).
Day 03 :Latza Kongmaru-Kongmaru-La-campsite of the langtang Chu , 7 hrs.
From the camp , steep ascent as far as the Kongmaru-La (5150km) .From the pass
, beautiful view of the northern face of the Kang Yaze (6400m). Easy descent
to the summer pastures of Nimaling (4700m) , one of the most beautiful high
valleys in Ladakh.
From Nimaling , pass the ridge (5000m) behind the campsite, go down into a beautiful
small valley , then pass another ridge (5000m) and go along the rocky north
west slope (fallen rocks) of the Kang Yaze as far as the Konka Wangpo
(5090m). Go down along ill-defined and very steep tracks (difficult for animals)
, then along the slope until reaching good campsites(4750m).Continue on the
mountainside for about 1 hr. down to the valley floor where the Langtang Chu
flows. Several campsites further uphill.
Day 04 : Campsite
of the Langtang Chu Zalung Karpo-La-Sorra , 8-9hrs.
Go up this broad valley .Cross a large stream and a morainic wall. Carry on
until the valley divides. Take right hand valley as far as the top of the Zalung
Karpo-La (5100m , 5hrs).From the top , go down a ridge (west ) towards a second
pass , then to the left as far as the valley floor. Follow it , no problem (several
campsites) , for 3.5hrs.Sorra , a summer village (4200m).
Day 05 :Sorra Dat , 5hrs.
A little ways beyond the last houses , go into wonderful , woody gorges. When
the valley widens , cross the Sorra Chu , go up the Dat Chu .These two rivers
make up the Chang Chu which flows into the Zanskar.Further on , leave a valley
on the right to go into a narrow transverse valley. The valley widens again
. Pass in front of several manis and chortens. The valley becomes very broad.Arrival
in Dat (4200m) , a village inhabited through out the year .Small Gelupa gompa.
Day 06 : Dat Yar La Lungmo Che , 6hrs.
From Dat , go towards the village of Dango.If it is towards the end of the season
, take some water with you for the next few hours. You follow the tracks without
difficulty , go into the third valley on the left. You climb a bit higher. Water
can be found at the foot of the Yar-La .Short , easy climb to the pass(4950m).
From the pass , fantastic view of the Rupshu. Easy
descent
for 1.5hrs to the summer village of Lungmo Che.
Day 07 : Lungmo Che Lun , 5-6hrs.
From Lungmo Che , go down along the river , right bank .Go to a large north-south
valley where the Zara Chu flows (dry from the end of August on ). Follow this
valley.Pass the small village of Sangtha. Not much water and grass. Continue
following the same valley , straight south as far as Yakbu. Wonderful campsite
with several low stone walls. Tibetan nomads live in this area. Continue south
.In 1.5hrs you arrive in Lun , after passing a large valley on the left.
Day 08 : Lun _ Marang-La- TAKH , 7-8hrs.
From Lun , along the left bank for half an hour , then take a good path which
leaves the river up to the left .You come to a beautiful plateau. Pass all the
valleys on your left , except the last. At first , the pass is rather narrow
but you soon find a well kept trail .Gentle rise at first. You arrive
at the Marang-La (about 5300m). Then long descent towards Takh .Military camp.
Day 9 to Day 11 : Takh Baralacha-La-Darsha.
In Takh you meet up with the Leh Manali military trail. Follow it without
difficulty .Pass Sarchu then Serai Konjung just beyond the bridge , then cross
the Baralacha-La (4650m).{From the pass , it is possible to go down along the
Chandra-Tal(south to east) which goes around the Lahaul massif and meets up
with the trail which leads to the Spiti at the foot of the Konzam-La. This alternative
can be impossible in July because of the water }After the Baralacha-La ,Zingzinbar
(military camp for maintaining the trail) then Patseo and Darsha. From there,
bus to Manali via Keylong and the Rohtang-La (about 11hrs)
