Alchi is situated 70 kms. from Leh. It is the only Gompa in Ladakh to have been
built on flat ground. The gompa was built in 11th century by the great translater
Ringchen Zangpo. This Gompa is considered to be among the most extensive examples
of Buddhist art in Kashmir. The region around Alchi was once vital for trade
and cultural contact with the rest of India. When Islamic armies entered the
subcontinent, thereafter the Buddhist monuments and monasteries were ones that
suffered most under the hands of iconoclasm. However, Alchi, escaped destruction
including some of the 900-year-old paintings and murals. The complex of Choskhor
consists five separate temples, various residential buildings and scattered
chortens. Among the oldest buildings are Dukhang and Sumtsek temple.
A short distance from Alchi is the SASPUL village which is worth a visit
for its hidden cave temple.
