A short route on which one visits several villages among the richest in Ladakh.
This tour seldom goes above 4000m . For this reason avoid the hot part of the
summer . Go to the place where the track leading to the Likir monastery meets
the Leh - Saspol bus. Allow 3 days.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 01 : Lilir - Yang tang , 4 ½ -5hrs.
From the point mentioned above , go to the village of Likir ( 20min.) . Follow
a road suitable for motor traffic but unused . Take a short cut and cross
the river which comes from the gompa. Take a good path then leave the last
houses and enter arid terrain. Gradual climb to a small pass, the Pobe-La
. From the pass , you go to the village of Sumdo ( 2hrs 20 min.) taking a
short cuts or the trail. { From Sumdo it is possible to go to the north .}
Cross the river ( bridge) , leave the village on the right -hand side. Carry
on through small , dry valleys for about 45 minutes until reaching the summit
of the Charatse - La . From the pass you arrive in Yang tang in 20 minutes
. { From Yangtang possible to hike to the monastery of Rizong ( 2-3hrs).}
Day 02 : Yangtang - Ang , 4hrs
Go down 10 minutes to the valley of Wulle. Good bridge across the river .
Then climb for 50 minutes to the Sermanchan - La before making an easy descent
towards Hemis - Shukpachan , a major village , the name of which comes from
the conifers (shukpa=Cedar ) which are found in this valley. Beautiful gompa
. Cross the village , then go onto a kind of flat as far as an ill-defined
pass. Steep descent , then go across mountainside (right hand side ) and climb
a rather steep slope to the summit of the Meptek-La ( 2hrs from Hemis-Shukpachan).
Easy half -hour descent towards the village of Ang. Very good campsite near
the river. {From Ang , it is possible to reach the valley of the Shyok to
the north }.
Day 03 : Ang - Khalse , 4 ½ -hours .
From Ang , head towards the south , go to the major village of Tingsmogang
(
30 min.). Perhaps the richest valley in Ladakh. Apricots , apples , huts. Beautiful
houses. { A road suitable for motor traffic links Tingsmogang and Nurla. A bus
a day .} From Tingsmogang follow the path leading to Tea. Constant succession
of fields and houses . Beautiful gompa above the village . Above Tea , a very
little -known monastery : Katza .{ Beyond Tea , a path leads to the Shyok through
the Largiab-la .}Cross fields to the river ( West) then steep climb to the Bongbong-La
( about one hour from Tingsmogang). Long , gently sloping descent into a beautiful
barren landscape. From a small pass , steep but short descent to the road. From
there allow a bit more than one hour to Khalse.
