Numbra means "green" the region has got best climate in Ladakh &
land is most fertile also full of grains & fruits like apples & apricot.The
chief crop is wheat ,barley, peas, millet, onion & buckwheat. Only opened
for the tourists in 1994 The road to numbra valley passes through highest motorable
road in the world at KHARDUNG LA ( 5602mts), the pass is always covered with
snow & fog. it has also got the highest temple in the world which is known
as JAI KHARDUNGLA BABA. The major water source of the valley are Shyok &
Nubra rivers.
Diksit
The caramel brown hillside supports the Diksit gompa which is the oldest &
biggest gompa of valley. It belongs to the Gelukpa Order. The gompa is 350 years
old and was built by the disciple of Tsong Khapa. & houses 70 monks. Little
above is the Larchung temple, which is the oldest structure. which has a huge
statue of Tsong Khapa. The gompa also has Kangyu Lang (Book Room) and Tsangyu
Lang (Store Room). It has got hundreds of original Tibetian and Mongolian texts
which are wrapped in yellow and red silk. The roof-top of the gompa gives a
spectacular view of Sumur towards the east and of the Kobet peak in the north.
Hunder
This place is 7 kms from Diskit. It is a pretty village, the area has got alot
of sand dunes & wild camels. the gompa here has got small statue of buddha
and some damaged frescoes.
Sumur
Sumur is pretty and major village of the valley & is known for its monastery,
the SAMTANLING GOMPA, inaugerated by Dalai lama in 1962 ,the gompa is home for
70 Gelukpa monks the structure of gompa is 150 years old and has got a large
complex with seven temples.There are Huge statue of Shakyamuni accompanied by
Maitreya and houses a fine collection of other idols, frescos and tangkhas(painted
and embroidered scrolls).
Panamik
This small village is famous for its hot springs which are meant to cure several
ailments. A small walk from the village leads to 250 years old ENSA Gompa which
has got old wall paintings & footprint of Tsong khapa, which were imprinted
during his journey from Tibet to India in 14th century.
