recent years. In the Markha valley , The best period is from June to October
.To take this treh one has to Go to Stok by road from Leh . Allow 08 days.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 01 : Stok - Foot of the Stok-La , 3hrs.
Cross the village of Stok , then follow on the left bank the river which comes
from the massif of Stok Kangri . After 2 hrs , the path leads away from
the river. Climb gently then leave a small pass on the left and go up a small
valley. Camp near a sheepfold.
Day 02 : Foot of the Stok La Stok-La Yurutse , 6
hrs.
From the sheepfold , long and steep ascent to the Stok-La ( 4900m / 3hrs) .
Steep descent , then a kind of flat until Rumbak .Pass the village , cross the
river ( bridge) and cross an escarpment. Go up the right bank , then the left
bank , easy going . Arrive in Yurutse . Beautiful house.
Day 03 : Yurutse Ganda-La Skiu , 6-7 hrs.
From Yurutse , good path along the mountainside , then cross a small valley
and zig zag steeply up to a flat , then go along the mountainside to the Ganda-La
( 4900m / 3hrs) .Long , easy descent towards Shingo ( 4 ½ hrs ) , then
into splendid gorges. Several easy fords. After a 2-hour descent arrive in the
valley of Markha. {Hiking Tour No. 11 Lamayuru Stok leads here from the
west.} Turn to the left (east) then a few hundred metres further to Skiu. Good
camp ( 5Rs.)
Day 04 : Skiu Markha , 7hrs.
From Skiu , good path on the right bank of the Markha. A great deal of vegetation
. Then on the left bank ( bridge ) , cross a barren plain , go back onto the
right bank ( bridge) and arrive in Chaluk ( a few houses ). Go to the river
, cross it and walk along the left bank. Another crossing , then short climb
towards Markha . Beautiful village . Very good campsite beyond the houses ,
near the river.
Day 05 : Markha - Tchatchutse , 6 hrs.
Go up the main valley on the right bank .The path is sometimes difficult in
the riverbed. Pass the monastery of Humlung .
Then , carry on along the right bank and arrive in Hankar . Several houses.
The path improves. A bit beyond Hankar ,leave a broad valley on the right hand
side. Bridge {Hiking Tours No. 6 Hemis Padum by the Jumlam and No. 7 Hemis
Darsha by the Rupshu .} The valley narrows and goes higher . Cross onto
the left bank ( bridge ) to reach the pastures of Tchatchutse.
Day 06 : Tchatchutse Nimaling , 3 hrs.
The path can be seen easily , several small inclines . The river is rather far
to the left (gorge).Walk near a small lake , then across pastures to Nimaling.
This is one of the most beautiful high valleys in Ladakh ( 4700m) , dominated
by the Kang Yaze ( 6400m) .Several fairly difficult routes lead to the summit.
Climbing the antecime (west) , on the other hand , is not too difficult. ( Crampons
, ice axe ).
Day 07 : Nimaling Kongmaru-La Shang , 8 hrs.
Cross the Markha ( easy ) . Long climb along the mountain side , then some zig
zagging up to the Kongmaru-La
