Duration : 06 Days / 05 Nights
Go to the village of Rangdum , one day by lorry from Kargil. Very beautiful
route , isolated and not much travelled until the junction with Padum - Lamayuru.
Possible from June until October , depending on the year , allow 6 days.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 01 : Rangdum (village ) - junction of Kanji-La and Puzdon-La , 7hrs.
From the village go several kilometers along the track towards the Rangdum gompa.
Go up along the river Kanji N on the right bank for half an hour , then cross
it. Continue along this river along a route with frequent ups and downs. Follow
this path until finding yourself in front of a narrow gorge. Several easy stream
crossings.Good campsite (4150m) .{From this camp , possible to meet up with
Hiking Tour No. 8 Padum -Lamayuru to Lingshed , in 2 or 3 days through the Puzdon-La
, Dibling and the Barmi-La (or Kesi-la ).
Day 02 : Junction of Kanji -La and Puzdon -La -Kanji-La-river Kong N
, 7-8 hrs.
Above the camp , take a path to the left of the gorge .The pack animal must
follow the gorge. After half an hour , go to the gorge which you follow until
reaching the Kanji-La across a mass of fallen rocks (difficult) (5150m,5hrs).From
the pass , go (west ) to the third cairn to find the way down. The first two
hundred metres are steep .Go down along the left bank , pass an escarpment and
make a very steep descent of about 300 metres to the river Kong N. Good campsite
(4300m).
Day 03 : River Kong N -Kanji , 4 hrs.
Follow the river , cross it several times , then along the right bank until
seeing Kanji. From there , cross and go along left bank until reaching the village
(3850m).{From Kanji , it is possible to reach the Kargil - Leh road at Heniskut
in one day.}
Day 04 : Kanji -Yogma-La-river Shillakong , 6hrs.
From Kanji , cross the river on a bridge then follow the left bank of the river
which down from the Yogma-La .After 1.5hrs cross this river infront of a small
village , then go up the valley leading to the Yogma-La (4700m , 5hrs).From
the summit of the pass , you reach the Shillakong in one hour along a steep
path . Cross it and arrive at a good campsite (4100m).
{From this camp , it is possible to reach Shilla and Lamayuru in one day (several
river crossings).
Day 05 : River Kong N -Kanji , 4hrs.
From the camp , long climb along left bank to the Sniugutse-La ( 5000m of which
the last 200 are steep , 4hrs). From the path , go down into a spectacular gorge.
After 20 minutes , you arrive at a stream which you follow for 1.5hrs until
reaching a river (meeting up with Hiking Tour No. 8 Padum -Lamamyuru ). From
there , 2hrs to Hanupatta ( 3450m).
Day 06 : Hanupatta -Khalsa , 8hrs.
From Hanupatta , you take a good path .Cross a gorge (path since 1984) , an
escarpment , then short descent towards a bridge. Go onto the right bank of
the Yapola as far as Phenjilla. Continue on the right bank , then on the left
bank until Wanla.{ From Wanla good path to Lamayuru ; takes 2.5hrs. From there,
through magnificent gorges following a trail suitable for motor traffic, you
reach the Kargil -Leh road in 3 hrs. Stop a bus or lorry and go to Khalse.
