The National Flag
The
national flag is known as The Tricolor. It feature three horizontal bands
of color-from top to bottom saffron orange, white and dark green. The chakra
wheel in the center of flag is based on the design that appears on the famous
Ashokan pilllar at Sarnath.
Political System & Government
India has parliamentary system of government with certain similarities
to the US system. There are two houses - a lower House known as the Lok Sabha
(House Of The People ) and an Upper House known as the Rajya Sabha (Councill
of States). The lower houses has 544 members (excluding the speaker), all
but two elected on a population basis (proprtional representation). Elections
for the Lok Sabha are held every five years, unless the Government calls an
election earliar. All Indians over the age of eighteen have the right to vote.
There is also State Goverment with Legislative Assemblies known as Vidhan
Sabha. The two national houses elect the Indian President, who is a figure
head, while the Prime Minister wields the real power.
The Central Government has the controversial right to assume power in any
state if the situation in that state is deemed to be unmanageable, a system
known as President's Rule.
