Bhattiprolu is a railway station on the Guntur - Repalli railway line and is
about 6 kms. from the right bank of Krishna river. The stupa of Bhattiprolu
is an irregular mass of brickwork with concentric courses of bricks visible
at places and it yielded the corporal relics of Lord Buddha . With respect to
sanctity and dimensions, this stupa found at Bhattiprolu stood next to only
the Mahachaitya of Amarvati at one time. The solid brick work of the stupa revealed
the drum of Stupa with wide terrace around the base of the dome which had four
cardinal direction projections. The drum was embellished with oblong limestone
slabs alternating with pilasters. Two pieces of a stone umbrella, ribbed inside
with mesh, have been found at the site. This umbrella must have crowned the
stupa. The most outstanding discovery at the site of the Bhattiprolu was three
inscribed stone receptacles near the hole of the stupa. At the inside of the
topmost receptacle were found, a globular black stone casket, copper bits including
a ring, pearls, beads, a cup-shaped casket, an inscribed hexagonal crystal bead,
gold flowers and two thin gold pieces relieved with tri-ratana symbol. The globular
casket, the receptacle and the lowest receptacle also yield similar Buddhist
antiquities with record of a large number of individuals belonging to different
families and guilds. The inscriptions found can be dated between 1st Century
and 2nd century AD.
