Kanispura also known as Kanishpur or Kamishpur in Baramullah district of Kashmir
valley is situated on the left bank of river Jhelum. This place has been identified
as city Kanishapura, whose foundation was laid by the Kushan king Kanishka during
1st and 2nd Century AD the golden period of Buddhism in Jammu & Kashmir.
The site confirms habitation from 3rd million BC to 10th Century AD. The Buddhist
affiliation starts from 1st Century AD and goes till 6th Century AD. There is
major Roman Greek influence on the material cultural facet of the Kanishpura.
The monastic complex was embellished with decorative terracotta tiles with floral
decorations and medallions with Dhamachi motif. Brahmi letter and Kharosthi
numerals were found on the tiles. The Buddhist literary evidences mention that
4th Buddhist Council was held at Kanishpura during the Kushan King Kanishka.
Several cities were also established during the reign of Kushan King as stated
in the literature.
