The ancient sites of Salipetaka or Salihundan is situated on the top of hill
overlooking Vamasadhara river which meets with the sea 8 kms. further down at
Kalingapatnam. The Buddhist monuments of the Salihundam form an impressive landmark
for miles around the crown of the hill. The monuments comprise of four structural
stupas, a gateway giving access to a rubble paved ramp at the end of which is
a circular sanctuary right on the crest of hill. Numerous stones of this ramp
are engraved with stone pilgrims records in ornamental shell characters. On
both sides of the ramp, are cluster of structures - sanctuaries, apsidal, circular
and oblong stupas, pillared mandapa etc. The most important edifice is the circular
stupa sanctuary fronted by oblong porch built on the highest terrace. The stupa
must have been faced with limestone slabs which is no longer exist but the original
plaster still survives at places.
The mains stupa made of wedge shaped bricks around a central hollow shaft with
stone faced base survives in parts.
