Location: District Malda (West Bengal)
Jagjivanpur is a small village in Malda district of West Bengal. This buddhist
site is located at a distance of 41 kms. east of Malda town via Kamdpakur. There
are several archaeological mounds in the locality of Jagjivanpur. The mound
Tulabhita has unearthed the eastern portion of a monastery indicative of the
existence of a covered pathway for circumbulation. The eastern part of the courtyard
is attached to the monastic wall. A steep staircase with three steps has been
exposed. A big stupa has also been identified. The eastern verandah with rammed
floor of the monastery has been found and two cells have been discovered on
the south-east corner of the mound with corbeled niches in the southern wall
of each cell. A huge brick stupa along with a wall adjacent to its southern
part has been exposed at the north-western corner of the mound. It seems that
the stupa was hollow inside. Numerous terracotta seals and sealing were found.
One of them depicts dharamchakra flanked by two deer on either side of the upper
portion and a legend in two lines below in 9th to 10th Century AD characters.
