The Buddhist site of Ramatirtham is located about 16 kms. northeast of Vizanagaram.
To the north of the village rises a chain of hills, one of which has yielded
a rich crop of Buddhist edifices. This hill is locally known as Gunubhakrakonda.
The main stupa is located on west end of the hill. Only base of this stupa has
survived. To the south, near the foot of the cliff, is a tank. This tank is
fed by the drip of water which trickles down from the rock overhead. To the
east of the main stupa is a higher terrace with rows of brick monastic cells
on the north and south sides of the base and the ruins. Immediately to the east
of the staircase leading to the lower terrace, is a ruined hall with monolithic
pillars. Beyond this mandapa and at different heights, there exists the extensive
remains of a series of four chaitya griha, the votive stupa. However, only two
of them have survived.
North of these chaityagriha, are two monasteries, each with long row of cells
running from west to east and facing south are worth visiting.
Several remains of Buddhist structure including a brick stupa and apsidal chaityagriha
exist on the adjoining hill called Durgakonda as well.
