The most important and sacred spot in the city is
SABARMATI ASHRAM OR GANDHI
SMARAK. Here, original letters and collection of photographs of mahatma
Gandhi's years of freedom fight are displayed. The ashram also has got the collection
of Gandhi's personal belongings, such as wooden shoes, white seamless cloths
and a pair of his round spectacles.
Places around Ahmedabad
ADALAGE VAV - means "the step well". This place is situated
19 kms. from Ahmedabad and is one of the most spectacular step wells in Gujrat.
Alive with exquisite sculptures on the walls, carved pillars that portray erotica,
dancing maidens, musicians and animals. The most beautiful is the image of Shiva
in his terrible aspect - Bhairav. The monument is best seen around the noon
when sunlight penetrates the five stories of Well shaft.
SARKHEG is 10 kms from Ahmedabad The area has beautifully fashioned monuments
arranged around an artificial lake.
NALSAROVAR RESERVE is 50 kms from Ahmedabad The total area of the lake
is 121 sq. kms. which attracts colonies of flamingos, cranes , storks, pelicans,
ducks and geese.
LOTHAL is located
100 kms from Ahmedabad, it is the largest excavated site with the remains of
Harappa Civilization that spreads across Western India to Eastern Pakistan.
The evidence found here proves that this was a vast city and one of the main
centers of the civilization dating back to 4th millennium BC
PATAN is 140 kms from Afmedabad, this place is most famous for its hand-woven
silk patola sarees (the one original piece can range between 75,000 to 1.5 lakhs
of rupees depending on the craftsmanship). Besides, Patan was also the ancient
capital of Hindu and Jain kings of Gujrat. The original city served various
Rajput dynasties, There is a stunning step well " RANI-KI-VAV " which
was built in year 1050 AD, the well has deep octagonal shaft and has got exquisite
figures and beautifully carved pillars.
The Jain Temples of Taranga are situated 100 kms from Ahmedabad , The temples
are particularly striking and well preserved than temples at Mount Abu. The
main temple is built of sandstone and it is dedicated to Lord Adinath ( II Tirthankar
of Jains).
