Guwahati
is the capital city of the state situated besides the Brahmaputra river. Its
a pleasant place famous for its numerous ancient Hindu temples. Guwahati is
also famous for world's biggest tea auction.
Places of interests in and around the city are -
KAMAKHYA DEVI TEMPLE - 8 kms. from the city, the temple is situated on
Nilachal hill, which is the centre of Shakti worship and Tantric cult. It is
said that the yoni of Shiva's wife Sati fell here. The origin of this temple
goes back to the dawn of time, but it was reconstructed in the year 1665 after
being destroyed by Muslim invaders. It is also a sacrificial site where sacrifice
practices can still be witnessed.
UMANANDA TEMPLE: situated on the Peacock Island, this is an interesting
place and temple here is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
NAVAGRAHA TEMPLE: This temple is dedicated to nine planets, where nine
planets are depicted in the form of nine lingas. This place is also known as
the centre of astrology and astronomy.
Other Places: Assam State Museum (good display of weavings, musical instruments
and gallery of sculptures) and Assam State Zoo & Botanical Garden.
Places around Guwahati -
HAJO: situated 28 kms. from Guwahati, it is an important pilgrimage centre
for Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. The Hindus worship at Hayagriba Madhab Temple,
Pao Mecca Mosque (is considered to have one quarter of sanctity of the great
mosque of MECCA). It is said that many Buddhists have attained Nirvana at this
place.
SAULKUCHI: 32kms from Guwahati, this place is famous for its rare MUGA
SILK WEAVING.
