It
ts the capital city of Sikkim. The name Gangtok means "HILLTOP". There
is an excellent view of entire Kanchanjungha range. Gangtok became the capital
of State only in mid 1800s but the town has gone rapid modernisation in the
recent years.
The important places of interest are -
Namgyal Institute Of Tibetology :- This institute was established in
1958 and promotes the research into the language and traditions of Tibet. There
are also some rare collection of the relics of monks from the time of Ashoka,
scripts, masks and sacred objects.
Orchid Sanctuary :- This sanctuary surrounds the Institute where one
can see the 454 species of orchids found in Sikkim.
Tsuk-La-Khang (Royal Chapel):- This is the principal place for Buddhists.
It has it large collection of scriptures and hold other images of Buddha and
Tantric deities.
Enchey Gompa :- Built in 1909, this place is famous for its religious
dances performed in the month of January. One can have a beautiful view of complete
Kanchanjungha Range from this place.
Places around Gangtok -
RUMTEK GOMPA :- It is 24 kms. from Gangtok. The monastery belongs to
the KAGYU PA Order of Tibetian Buddhism. The recent structure of the monastery
is built by Gyalwa Karmapa, which has got typical traditional design of Tibet.
The religious dance of TSECHU is performed in the month of July. The dance depicts
the events of Guru Rimpoche's life.
TSONGO LAKE :- Recently, open for foreigners, this beautiful lake is
located 34 kms. at north-east of Gangtok.
