Kottayam
is the commercial center and serves as a major point which gives easy access
to some of the most exotic scenery of Kerala. Situated 76 kms. of Cochin, it
is located between the backwaters to its west and the spice, tea, rubber plantation
and mountains of Western Ghats on its eastern side.
Places around Kottayam -
Kumarakom
16 kms. from Kottayam, it is an island on Vembanad Lake. It has got a Bird Sanctuary,
which serves as a winter home for many migratory birds mostly from Siberia.
The other species that are found here include, Little Cormorant, Night Heron,
Golden Beaked Woodpecker, Crow Pheasant, White Breasted Water Hen, Snake Bird,
Tree Pie etc.
Aranmula
It is a single day trip from the Kottayam with an ancient temple dedicated to
Parthasarathi. This small village is also known for manufacturing extraordinary
metal mirrors produced by using lost wax technique and with the alloys of Copper,
Silver, Brass, Lead and Bronze. These ornamental mirrors are extremely rare
because only two metal craftsmen are left and the cost of model can vary from
Rs. 300 to Rs. 50,000. This small town becomes a center of attraction during
the end of Onam Festival when The Snake Boat Regatta is celebrated as a part
of temple rituals.
Ettumanur
Situated 12 kms. From Kottayam, this place has got a circular shrine with fine
wood carving dedicated to Lord Shiva in His most terrible aspect described as
Vaddikasula Vada or Rudra (One who takes his dues with interest and is difficult
to please). The shrine also houses some beautiful paintings and can be photographed
after obtaining the Camera ticket. Ettumanur hosts a 10 - day long annual festival
(Feb. / Mar.) out of which, the most important days are 8th and 10th day on
which priests bring out elephants fashioned with 210 pounds of gold.
