It's
a beautiful velley the altitude allows the growth of rice crops and fruits.It
is one of the major tourist destination of Bhutan and also jumping of and ending
point of many track.This place is most famous for Punakha dzong.It is a massive
sttucture built at the junction of two rivers.It was the capital of Bhutan untill
1955,and still serves as the winter residence of the monk body.The firs King,Ugyen
Wangchuck was crowned here in 1907.The fortress has withstood several damages
from fire,earthuake and flood.The latest flood of Oct'1994 caused great damages
to the fortress but miraculously spared the statue of Buddha jojampa.
Spectacular views of the himalayas can be taken in on the road from Thimpu to
Punakha. The Punakha Dzong built in the 16th century, was the winter capital
of Bhutan for 300 years. Today it is the winter home of the Je Khenpo, the chief
abode of hundreds of Monks as well as the administrative headquarters for the
Punak district.
