is the most picturesque of all the destinations of Chardham yatra. For Hindus,
Gangotri is the spiritual source of India' Holiest river The Ganges. While its
physical source is at the ice-cave of Gomukh (14 kms. from the valley). The
valley itself is mostly populated with Hindu believers and foreign adventure
lovers.
Places Around Gangotri -
GOMUKH & GANGOTRI GLACIER: The fleet of steps along the side of Gangotri
temple leads to stunning vista of Gangotri glacier - one of the most beautiful
and accessible glaciers in the inner Himalayas (17 kms. from the road). 14 kms.
from Gangotri lies the icy cave of Gomukh (the cow's mouth). This is the original
point from where the Holy Ganges emerges with a great force from the glacier
within. The glacier here continuously changes in appearence and big boulders
of ice tumble into the raging water.

towering site of Shivaling peak (6543 mtrs.), where you are greeted with the
fantastic meadows and beautiful landscape of Tapovan. Here one can see the heards
of grazing Bharal (mountain goats) and tranquil stream which makes the bizarre
contrast with the sea of ice. Nandavan lies at the meadow below thae Bhagirathi
peaks at the junction of the glacier known as the Chaturang Bamak. From here
one can get the magnificent view of Bhagirathi, Shivalinga and huge snowy mass
of Kedar Dome (6831 mtrs.).
KEDAR TAL: is 17 kms. from Gangotri (this route include 2000 mtrs. of
steep climb). Surrounded by the grand mountains, this is the source of Kedar
Ganga - an emerald lake situated at 5000 mtrs. above the sea level.
