Bhopal
is the capital city of the State and is also known as the city of lakes. The
city is divided in two parts - new & old. Old city has crowded markets,
huge old mosque and the palaces of the former Begums who once ruled the city.
Places nearby Bhopal -
Sanchi
Just 46 kms. north of Bhopal lie some of the the oldest and most interesting
Buddhist structures in India. Although this place has no direct connection with
the life of Buddha, still it is one of the most famous Buddhist site in India.
Sanchi boasts of following landmarks -
- Archaeological Museum :- The major attractions of this museum are Ashoka
Pillar, Yakshi (Maiden) and the beautiful sandstone sculpture of Buddha.
- The Great Stupa :- Originally constructed by King Ashoka in 3rd century
B.C., it is one of the main structure on a hill. There are 4 entrances through
beautifully carved gates of or "Toranas" which are the finest works
of art at Sanchi. The present structure stands 16 metres high and 37 metres
in diameter.
- Toranas :- The 4 gates were erected around 35 B.C. The scenes carved
on the pillars tell the episodes of Buddha's life.
There are many other stupas on the hill which were again built by Ashoka. Out
of these, only three stupas remain intact.
- Pillars :- Scattered all around the site are the pillars & of which
the most imporatant is the 10th pillar erected by King Ashoka, which stands
close to the southern entrance of the stupa.
- Temples :- There are several temples dating from from 7th Century B.C.
to 11th Century A.D. Some of these temples are remarkably similar to classical
Greek columned buildings.
- Monasteries :- There are several monasteries situated at the hill top
which were built after the building of Stupa.
- Gateways :- There are several gateways situated in different directions.
These structures are the masterpiece of art and architecture. These beautiful
rock - carved gateways depict incidences of Buddha's life.
Vidisha
It
is 56 kms. from Bhopal. The place is known for its various Hindu temples. It
is claimed that the bricks used in Vishnu temple (constructed in 2nd Century
B.C.) were stuck together with lime mortar is world's oldest cement.

Udaypur :
is 90 kms. from Sanchi. The place is famous for Neelkantheshwar Temple, which
was built in 1059 A.D. The specialty of this temple is that it is aligned in
such a manner so that the first morning sun rays shines on the Shivaling.
Bhojpur :
28 kms. from Bhopal, this place is known for its 400 sq. kms. artificial lake
which is destroyed now. There are a couple of temples and the jain shrine having
a giant image of Mahavir.
