Amritsar
is both the centre of sikh religion as well as the Capital city of State of
Punjab. The name "Amritsar" means "Pool Of Nector" which
referes to the sacred tank around which the Golden Temple is built. The city
is of much historical importance and it has been one of the major centres of
Indian Freedom Struggle. The originalcity site was granted by Mughal Emperor
Akbar and was later on destroyed by Ahmed Shah Durrani.
The major attractions of the city are -
GOLDEN TEMPLE -
It is one of the most important shrines of Sikh believers. The temple was originally
built in 1761, but was destroyed by Ahmedshah Durrani. In 1802, it was roofed
over with Copper gilded plates by Ranjeet Singh and ever since it has been famous
as Golden Temple.
JALLIANWALA BAGH -
This park is situated just 5 minutes walk away from Golden Temple and commemorates
2000 Indians who were killed by Britishers to try and supress the Indian Freedom
Movement in 1919. A section of the walsl with bullet marks is still visible.
Jallianwala Bagh is related with one of the major events during India's struggle
for independence.
TARREN TARAN -
It is 25 Kms. from Amritsar and is an important Sikh Tank constructed by Maharaja
Ranjeet Singh. It is believed that if a lepar could swim across the tank, he
will be cured.
OTHER LANDMARKS include Durgiana Temple, Rambagh, Mosque Of Mohammed
Jaan, Gobindgarh Fort.
