Indore
is the second largest city of the Madhya Pradesh. Indore is situated on the
ancient pilgrimage route to Ujjain. From 1733, this city was ruled by Holkar
Dynasty. Indore serves as a base for visiting Mandu. Indore is most famous for
Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple (one of the 12 Jyotirlingas all over India), which
is 77 kms. from the city. The sculptures on this important Shiva temple are
extremely detailed. Around the temple, one can also see few old ruined temples
dedicated to Lord Vishnu. There is a temple dedicated to Varaha incarnation
of Vishnu that has got 24 figures of Lord Vishnu carved in green stone. One
can also see an 18 ft. long figure of Goddess Chamundi with 10 arms holding
clubs and skulls.
Other attractions of Indore include some beautiful 19th century palaces and
havelis of rich merchants having intricate carvings and beautiful murals among
which Rajwada and Lalbagh palace are notable. Rajmandir, Museum, Chhatribagh
(memorial tombs of the former rulers of this region). Bada Ganpati Temple (reputed
to be the largest Ganesha statue in the world with 8 meters height), Kajuri
Bazaar etc. are some other places worth a visit.
