-| Elephanta Tour | -
Originally
known as Gharapuri, "the city of Ghara Priests" the island was renamed
in 16th Century by Portuguese in honour of a Carved Elephant that was found
at this port itself.
Elephanta is an hour's boatride from Mumbai and also is the most atmospheric
place in and around Mumbai. The highlights of this island are its unique cave
temple and Hindu Mythological sculptures.
The cave of Elephanta belongs to 8thCentury and covers the area of 5000 Sq.
Mtrs. There are four entrances into the main shrine, the most notable sculptures
of this cave are Trimurti (Three faced image of Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh
- The Holy Trinity), sculpture of Ravana lifting Mount Kailash, Ardhnarishwar,
Natraj (Shiva's Cosmic Dance) to name a few.
Despite little pollution by small fishing community, Elephants makes wonderful
contrast to the seething claustrophobia of the city of Mumbai.
