Situated
10 Kms. from Tiruvanathapuram, Kovalam is the third essential stopover on a
triangular tour of Tropical South India. It is a coastal village but now, it
is Kerala's one of the most well-developed beach resorts. European travelers
have been visiting Kovalam since 1930s.
Kovalam consists of four successive small crescent beaches -
Pozhikkara Beach
3 kms. from the main town, it is the place where sea merges with the backwaters
and forms the salt water lagoon. This place has got mixed community of Hindu
fishermen and Christian coir-makers. It is an excellent point to start one's
backwater trips as the local ferries shuttle across the narrow lagoons to the
beaches.
Vizhinjam Village
It is one km. south of Kovalam beach and the village was the capital of
Ay Kingdom (7th to 11th Century). It is a small fishing village packed with
boats which set out for fishing on sunsets. It is a big artificial harbor dominated
by a pink and green mosque and a huge catholic church. There are a number of
rock cut temples and some of them are unfinished and date back to 8th Century.
The notable among the temples are Talishiva Temple, Kovilkadu (Forest Temple)
etc.
