name is derived from Dorje Ling which means 'the place of thunderbolts'. Darjeeling
is the part of victorian holiday resorts and also the major tea growing centre
of India. This place is very popular among the holiday makers from plains. Darjeeling
is also famous as the starting point for some of the magnificent treks like
Sandakphu etc.

The other most famous attractions of Darjeeling are -
Darjeeling Zoo - which is worth a visit and is a home for several endangered
species like Snow Leopard, Royal Bengal Tiger, Siberian Tige apart from other
fauna like Himalayan Bears, Wolves etc. This zoo also runs a breading programmes
with considerable success.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute - It is possibly India's most important
training centres for climbers. The very first director of this Institute was
Sherapa Tenzing Norgay - the conqueror of Mount Everest. This Institute also
has a museum dedicated to the history of mountaineering with old as well as
equipments plus collection of costumes of different Himalayan tribes.
The Institue also houses the Everest Museum which is dedicated to the real
life legend "the conquest of highest peak in the world Mount Everest".
The museum displays the photographs of Tenzing and Hillary's successful climb
in 1953. The museum also has a huge telescope pointing at Kanchanjungha known
as Hitler's telescope (it was presented by Adolf HItler to a Nepalese General).
Tiger Hill - It is the most famous spot around Darjeeling which is famous
for its incredible viewpoint (2585 mtrs.). It provides an unparalleled 369 degree
Himalayan panorama with incomperable sunrise over Kanchanjungha that can be
rated as one of the best in the world.
Monasteries - Darjeeling shelters a large population of Tibetian refugees
and proves itself as a good place to feel and see the Tibeian culture adequately
backed by a number of monasteries such as Bhotia Basti, Ghoom Monastery, Samten
Cholin, Nyingmapa Gonjan Moanstery (School of Tobetian Thangka Painting), Sonada
Monastery to name a few.
