Kalimpong
is a small hilly town situated in the north of West Bengal and can be termed
as the sister town of Darjeeling. In fact, this town is worth a visit even if
for taking the journey from Darjeeling via Teesta River bridge. The town is
at an altitude of 1250 meters and was once a important trading town on the Tibet
route. This town is famous for its beautiful Gladioli and Orchids.
Apart from the natural beauty, Kalimpong is also famous for its monasteries
(Among few monasteries of this town, Tharpa Choling Gompa established in 1922
and belonging to Geluk Pa order is remarkable. The other famous one is Thongsa
Gompa, the oldest in the area and originally founded in 1692.)
The other landmarks of the Kalimpong are Dr. Graham's Home (School for underprivileged
children founded in 1900) , Sericulture Research Institute, Flower Nurseries,
Rinkingpong Hill or Durpin Dara (means Binocular Ridge) which is a good view
point and also a good private library for the studies of Himalayan and Tibetan
Culture and Languages. Moreover, one can also take walks in the surrounding
area that offer some beautiful views as well as explore the quaint villages
in the vicinity.
