Jhansi
is situated 101 kms. from Gwalior. This place played a colorful and important
role during the first Indian Mutiny against British rule in 1857. The queen
of this state Rani Lakshmi Bai spearheaded this first formal fight against British
imperialism. She is at the center many legends of this area. The places of historical
importance include the Jhansi fort where the battle took place.
Apart from the Fort, the other places of interest are the Archaeological Museum,
Rani Lakshmi Mahal and St. Jude's Shrine (It is the most important Catholic
shrine in India. The bones belonging to the patron St. Jude are said to be buried
in the foundation of this cathedral. The feast day of Saint is celebrated on
28th of October attracting thousands of pilgrims).
