Haridwar
is situated at the point where Ganges slows its progress across the Indian plains.
Haridwar means "Gateway To The Gods", which makes it a particularly
Holy place. The town of Haridwar is noisy and its streets are full of crowd.
In every 12 years, Haridwar hosts THE KUMBH MELA , which attracts millions
of pilgrims to take the holy dip into the Ganges.
The important landmarks of the town are -
HAR KI PAURI: means the "footstep of God". Is supposed to be
at the precise point where ganges leaves the mountain and enters the plains.
It is beleived that the footstep of Lord Vishnu is endorsed in a stone here
and a dip into the Ganges will wash away the sins of the believer and secures
Moksha. Non-hindus were once forbidden to step on the ghats, but due to new
spirit forein believers can now join the worship of Holy ganges (Ganga Aarti).
