Situated
60 kms from Bhubaneshwar, it is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage spot. The
life of the city revolves around the Great Jagannath Temple. It is believed
that this was the hiding place of Buddha's tooth before it was spirited away
to Srilanka. Puri's other great attraction is non-sandy beach and the lively
dance and music festival during the month of November.
Jagannath Temple
Dedicated to the Lord of the Universe, this temple is closed to the non-Hindus.
The present form of the temple was built in 1198. It is one of the holiest Hindu
temples in India which employs 6000 men to perform the temple rituals and maintenance.
It is estimated that 20,000 people are dependent on this temple. The most important
event associated with this temple is Rathyatra Festival. It is one of the most
celebrated annual religious festival in India. The images of Lord Jagannath,
his brother and and sister are brought out of the temples and placed on three
separate chariots (14 meters high and having 16 wheels) pulled by over 4000
pullars and devotees.
Gundicha Mandir
The garden house of this temple is the residing place for the Gods of Rathyatra
for 7 days.

Raghurajpur is 10 kms from Puri, it is famous for its cotton cloth painting
with mixture of gum and chalk known as "patachitra" paintings.
Pipli is 23 kms from Puri. This village is famous for its handicrafts and colorful
materials used to make umbrella and wall - hangings.
