The most reknowned among these dance forms are : Bharatnatyam, Kathakali and
Mohini Attam.
Bharatnatyam :
This is believed to be India's oldest form of classical dance. The performace
is basically poetry in motion. The origin of this dance form is found in Natya
Shastra written in 4th Century B.C. The performances are mainly given by women
but sometimes men also perform. This dance form was originally known as Dasi
Attam and was performed by Devdasis in front of Deities in temples.
Kathakali :
It is a unique dance drama which is has become a symbol of Kerala. It evolved
during 8th Century from Rama Attam, the drama was created by Kottarakkara Thampuram.
This elaborate performance is usually performed in the evening and continues
till dawn. This form of dance is an interal form of dance at Temples and Festivals
of Kerala. The performances are given with a unique costume, make-up and ornaments,
which brings out the superhuman effect. There is no speach involved in the performance,
but the story goes through the Mudras (Gestures) and facial expressions. Music
is an important part of the performance where normaly two vocalists along with
Chengila (Gong), symbols and mandalams. The performance calls for a high degreee
of body and muscular movements as well as facial expressions.
Mohini Attam :
It
is a solo dance performance with graceful elegance of Bharatnatyam and the vigorous
movements of Kathakali, which is set to create he mood of Sringara (Erotic).
This dance is an intergral part of religious festivals and celebrations at temples.
Martial Art Of Kerala :
Kalaripayttu is the Martial At form of Kerala and is the oldest and most scientific
self defence system. It is regarded as the mother of all Martial Art forms prevalent
in modern world. Kalaripayttu has different styles, generally classified into
two : The Southern Style & The Northern Style. It is basically a psychological
system aiming to nurture a precise way of non-violence, self-analysis and self-control.
The sole aim of the practitioner is to master the system of self defence and
proper use of various weapons. It encompasses various Ayurvedic herbal treatements
for the chronic ailments, massage, that repairs the physical and muscular damages.
It starts with features like Chattom (Jumping), Ottam (Running), Marichil (Somarsault)
etc. The later stage include lessons to use various weapons like daggers, spears,
